If you follow me on Instagram, you can tell that I am a huge fan of the outdoors. That comes with no surprise living here in Florida, since being surrounded by beach is already a given. No, but seriously, there are so many outdoor activities Florida has to offer – hiking, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, bird watching, zip lining, or tubing down one of many crystal springs.

I basically knew how to fish since I could walk – so that’s been an obvious passion of mine ever since!  And just over a year ago my husband and I downgraded our Key West boat – *sad tear* – to two fishing kayaks. Our adventures have been wildly different, but in a good way!

We spend hours kayaking Florida rivers, lakes, mangrove tunnels and flats, as well as fishing secret coves, marshes and honey holes that boats just can’t get to. Plus what could be better than a workout that keeps you healthy physically and mentally, as well as simply being enjoyable. To me there is no better meditation than surrounding myself in nature. And I don’t know about you, but it brings me this sense of peace and clarity being out on the water.

The key to what makes our days in the great outdoors so worth while is preparation and having the right essentials. As an avid kayak fisher it’s crucial for me to have what I need, especially in the Florida summer heat. Take a look into my tackle bag – there’s more than just bait and hooks – for the must-haves I pack in order to enjoy my active outdoor lifestyle.

Sunscreen

I have ended up a lobster one too many times without it, so packing sunscreen is a definite must when out in the sun (especially on the water). Plus, if you’re exploring the outdoors – like hiking, fishing or kayaking – applying once beforehand just doesn’t cut it these days. Save yourself and your skin from the aftermath – no one wants that awkward farmer’s tan, anyway!

Water

Obviously water is a crucial necessity when enjoying activities – rain or shine. When the body exerts energy from being in the sun, it needs to be replenished and hydrated (even when you’re not thirsty). Always make sure to carry water with you, and more than enough of it, when not easily accessible.

TIP: buy flavored water for outdoor activities so you will be encouraged to drink it.

Repellent

Though sometimes doable without, there might be that one case you will regret not having it. Whether you are out hiking, kayaking, camping, fishing, running or doing yoga on the beach at sunrise – the unexpected can happen. Being eaten alive by mosquitoes or no-see-ums (those awful bugs you can’t see) can quickly ruin the enjoyment of the outdoors. And depending on where you live and the activity, investing in bear repellent wouldn’t be a terrible idea either.

GPS

I’m not talking about the GPS on your phone – you can’t always trust that you’ll have a wifi signal. Getting lost can actually be easier than you think. Trust me when I say that I’ve gone into panic a time or two in places I thought I knew by heart.

Whether you’re on a hike or kayaking a river, sounds can seem closer than they really are and can also steer you in the wrong direction. So just because you “know the area” or don’t think you’ll stray too far off the beaten path, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Snacks on-the-go

The reality is, if I have nothing to keep me fueled for hours at a time, I won’t last very long on the water or in the outdoors. And when you’re out in the heat, bringing snacks that require being kept cool can be a nuisance. I want something on-the-go and heat-tolerant, yet satisfying. With Lorissa’s Kitchen, I have the convenience of the perfect on-the-go snack for my active outdoor lifestyle, and to take on hours of kayaking and fishing.

The Original Beef Steak Strips are my favorite – hands down. It’s a rich sweet and salty blend with a peppery kick, combined with a smokey aroma. If you’re one for extra flavor and pizzazz, there’s also the Ginger Teriyaki Chicken Cuts and a Korean Barbeque Beef Steak Strips that will make your mouth water.
