It’s crazy how expensive commercial pill hiding treats are for dogs! Not only that but they’re made with absolute trash ingredients – lots of sugar, like molasses, and unnecessarily filler ingredients to get that soft, pliable texture, like glycerin. I said no more and decided to make my own pill hiding dough for my dog with two simple and actually healthy ingredients.
This no-bake recipe is so easy, so simple you’ll wonder why you ever wasted money month after month when this is a fraction of the cost.
Moreover, you can easily switch up the ingredients for this recipe, and I share alternatives and additions at the end of this post. The two main ingredients in this recipe are sweet potato and coconut flour. THAT’S IT.

No-bake pill hiding treats for dogs (2 Simple Ingredients)
Ingredients
- 1 Medium Sweet potato (1 medium sweet potato can make over a week's worth of marble-sized pill treats at 2 treats per day)
- Coconut flour (For amount details, read the instructions)
Instructions
- Making the treats takes the most time, initially, but once you've cooked your sweet potato you'll have enough for days if not weeks.
- You can cook your sweet potato however you choose, whether baking or boiling it. I went with boiling whole. This takes roughly 20-30 minutes depending on your size sweet potato – same with baking.
- Once your sweet potato is cooked, you're going to have to factor how you'll store it. Cooked sweet potato lasts up to 5 days in the fridge, and months in the freezer. If you don't think you'll go through it all in that time, you can gauge 5-days worth and freeze the rest. For me, one small/medium sweet potato will last more than 5 days for my dog, so I went ahead and froze about 2/3 of it for later use.
- With the amount of cooked sweet potato you'll be storing in the fridge, now it's time to mix in the coconut flour.*Important: DO NOT use regular flour. Raw flour cannot be consumed unless cooked, so beware of other recipes on the internet that call for APF or wheat flour.
- My personal rule of thumb is a 1:1 ratio (1 part sweet potato and 1 part coconut flour). To break this down further, for every 1 tablespoon of sweet potato add 1 tablespoon of coconut flour. But you are free to add more or less. The consistency should not be sticky but should be fairly easily pliable – you should be able to roll it into little balls in your hands.
- Place the mixture in an air-tight container and keep refrigerated for up to 5 days. When you're ready to give, simply spoon out a portion large enough to encase the pill.*Make enough to freeze! Simply portion out an amount for 5 days, roll into balls and freeze. Defrost a ball when you need it and place into the fridge. Consistency does not change frozen to thawed!
